My 1999 6x4 started to idle a little faster and now it really grinds into gear, sometimes very difficult, and won't sit at idle without foot brake on. It even is hard to stop momentum.
I can push the idle arm a little against the stop screw, and that will slow the idle to normal, but it will pull back to the increased speed again.
Can it be simply the spring on the idle arm?, but it seems to pull in the opposite direction.

Do you have any play in the throttle cable at the gas pedal end? There is a threaded adjustment there to allow for some free play. This may help. ....

Your problem is probably the screw that is in the throttle plate, the one that the governor arm hooks to, on the carb. Back that one off. There are two screws that control idle speed, that one and the one out away from the carb on the linkage. If you can't get it idled down with either of them, it's the throttle cable and it can be adjusted with two 11mm wrenches ....
